There is also the possibility that Dell will announce some extensions to their web presence at earnings.... not just the dellauctions site but links to other goods or who knows what. Of course this is all fluff compared the their primary business but its hard to say what plans like this could do to the stock. For example, ebay has established itself as a sticky site (a lot of people are "addicted") and more than anything else that is what propels ebay stock... not jsut how much revenue they receive from auctions (same with amazon). Nobody quite knows how to value a dominant website.... but it has nothing to do with sales. I cant see any reason why the Dell site wouldnt be in the top 10 along with ebay, amzn and some yahoo stuff. But they dont present themselves as that now.

I posted this to Chuzzlewit because he disagrees with net valuations. Nonetheless they are a factor.

Chuzzlewit, re:<<So isn't it fair to say that a reaction based on belief rather than data is mindless?>> Don't you believe that these analysts have models that they use in their analysis of companies? I strongly suspect that they have a data base to work from. Analysts are forever talking with and visiting companies. Further, I can't believe that the analysts aren't aware of IDC and all the other independent research firms around. I suspect they get data from research firms that we, as retail investors, don't even know exist. They would be research firms that deal only with institutional and investment houses. So, I'm not so sure the analysts are "shooting from the hip". Whether or not the analysts are correct in what they come up with is another matter. As you have pointed out many times, modeling and forecasting are difficult tasks to perform.
