The problem there is that some states (NY,CA,TX) already have very high sales taxes. Then you could have sales taxes of 40%+ if you wanted to buy anything and live there. Again, what about housing? Thats a purchase isnt it? Those states would protest for sure. Also you would have tons of out of state purchasing over the internet.

From what I've heard VATs tend to get out of hand quickly, especially on things that go through several steps. And each sector feels it's being singled out. Another problem I have heard about is that the income tax is never really done away with and since it is lowered it is easy to raise. You wind up with two taxes, each growing in it's own ugly way.
