Michelle, I wanted to take this opportunity to mention that most conservatives favor tax simplification: either the vat, or the flat tax, or the "flat tax lite", with modest progressivity, in one or two steps from the base. All deductions, credits, and so forth, would be eliminated. The desire to use the tax code to achieve social ends is limited to a minority of social conservatives. The "family wage" that has been floated has little support, as far as I can see from talk at the conferences I occasionally attend, precisely because tampering with wages creates major distortions. Certainly, I am against it, on the same grounds that I am against the minimum wage or "comparable worth" scales.
