safety / pollution critical operations i.e. navigation, manoeuvring
prepare to operate automatic computer-controlled equipment manually

essential operations i.e. transfer of bunkers to the day tank, pumping bilges

where possible suspend operations where it entails rendering critical / back-up systems, machinery or equipment temporarily inoperable

STAGE II - IN ADVANCE OF EACH EDR CRITICAL PERIOD

Have all ship's personnel been alerted to the forthcoming critical period and been informed of why these periods could cause difficulties on board ship?

o personnel who have been assigned EDR duties clearly understand them?

There may be a need to revert to manual operations in some areas. Have all safety / pollution critical systems been recently tested for manual operation?

Has familiarisation training been arranged to practise manually overriding and operating safety critical equipment?

There may be power supply interruptions. Have all reserve / back-up power supply arrangements been recently tested for blackout conditions?

At what stage of the voyage will the ship be during the critical period?

If at sea, will the route plan need to be revised?

If in port, are plans in place to liaise with the port authority / terminal operator to discuss and agree contingency plans for ensuring the continuity of safe operations?

STAGE III - ON ENTERING EVERY EDR CRITICAL PERIOD

Is the ship in a state of sufficient readiness?

Have manning arrangements been revised to release personnel for their EDR duties?

Has a ship position and status report been sent to the shipowner / manager
