Of course, the wyf of beside Bath might have learned her "phew" from any of her five husbands or other companie of youth, or in Rome, or eek Jerussalem. I think she would have joined this converse with some enthusiasm on folk etymology -- despite here hosen of full scarlet reed and hir hipes large. Better look out for her spores sharp.
