As you know, numbers are obtained for the number of units shipped or sold, I'm not sure which. IDC and others have these figures. So, they are getting them from these companies in some way or another.

But from his comment:

"It sells direct to its customers, so there's no way to check whether its sales are strong or its sales are weak, other than to get comments from the company that would indicate that."

this would mean, I think, that IDC and others get their figures from the distributors/stores who buy from the manufacturers as opposed to the manufacturers themselves That is why they can't get the units shipped/sold from Dell.

But if this is true, no amount of math will get one the figure of units Dell has sold. But supposedly Niles has been able to figure this out.

Confusion reigns.
