musea,

The compounded growth rate I used for AOL was obviously tongue-in-cheek. Since AOL added 1 million subscribers in January to a 15 million base (a bit over 6% in a month) which would cause AOL to double in 12 months, which it did do last year, I just did a reducio ad absurdum argument by assuming a doubling every year (6%/month forever) to point out that in about 10 years AOL would have to start signing up Martians because they would have all the Earthlings.
Best,
--Steve

I think what Steve was doing was demonstrating the absurdity of the assumption.
