Richard - Royalty payments (typically 5-10% of sales or whatever) can be compared to about 50% margin on sales. Pus early-to-market advantage over the competition.

I can see the royalty potential in the aerospace industry. With dozens of battery manufacturers in and outside USA, barrier to entry is not as high. Licensing may follow at a later date. I have not heard Intel licensing their Pentium chip technology as soon as it comes to market, because of royalty payments. There is a plenty of time to see how VLNC plays its technology leadership strategy. No wonder VLNC is not in a hurry to sell laminates.

Aside - top ten companies with 1998 US patents are:
IBM 2657
Canon Kabushiki Kaisha 1928
NEC 1627
Motorola 1406
Sony 1316
Samsung Electronics 1304
Fujitsu 1189
Toshiba 1170
Eastman Kodak 1124
Hitachi 1094
An increading number of patents are being awarded to Japanese and Korean companies.
