Stitch,
...and here I thought I was going to bed early tonight. Now I have to digest your post <g>.

Re: Six Sigma
<<Emphasis is being placed on Responsiveness (change in market
conditions, time-to-mrkt) Material control (JIT, supplier management), Optimization (capital, people, space), and Quality (six-sigma).>>
All of the above are part and parcel of a Six Sigma driven company.
Lesson from the master: ge.com
"For our customers, Six Sigma means getting them what they want, when they want it, on time, undamaged, and working - the five "critical to quality" factors, or CTQs, that have been identified in the early stages of our efforts. "

Thanks for thoughtful and timely post,

Yogi

<<In addition they discussed some change in market
factors such as the aim at a $50.00 disk drive, the growth in network computing,>>
Are you referring to network computing with thin clients. A friend with IBM tells me he feels this is the wave of the future in corporations to reduce administrative costs. Perhaps he's biased since he now works in the mainframe division. Still isn't clear to me that it doesn't make sense to have a disk drive in the client (but one that the user can't alter).
Anyone have a good feel for which way this battle is likely to play out?

Stitch, Had to read your post about three times since I'm still half asleep. Finally concluded that it sounds like SEG hired a silver tounged consultant to tell them everything they already know about the business. All the key variables have been identified along with a view of their future. But its not clear to me that these aren't all the same issues the industry has been trying to optimize for years. And, I have to wonder, with shorter product cycles, do you really have time to be moving production around mid-life as opposed to after proving the technology on a pilot line. If you're late to market, you miss the first phase. -Z

Stich,

Post much appreciated. Reminded me of my OPNS class (a good/useful thing!) ...

Interested in you estimation of the timetables (or more appropriately, timetable?) for the profitable "$50 drive" and the "single-chip" solution.
