LIMA (Feb. 12) XINHUA - Peru"s gold sales went up by 85 percent in 1998 to reach 925.3 million U.S. dollars, Customs sources said Friday.

Peruvian gold output stood at 93.78 tons in 1998, or a 22.07 percent rise, the Energy and Mines Ministry said.

The output increase is attributed to an expansion in the Yanacocha gold deposit, which alone yielded 41.35 tons of gold last year.

Due to the drop of metal prices on the market, gold has become the only metal produced in Peru that covers its costs and even generates profits. Enditem 13/02/99 01:45 GMT
