Uncle,

Things change, this was taken from the two week old article you posted earlier:

"...Toprani cited In-Stat Inc. figures predicting that Rambus memories will take 10 percent of the DRAM market this year, almost 40 percent next year and more than 50 percent in 2001...."

unclewest,

Actually, I think base, concurrent, and direct rambus memories are 3 different technologies with non-interchangeable (or close to it) parts.

In our case, Intel is using only Direct RDRAM in their computers. The 600/800 Mhz discussion is more like whether you're running a car in 3rd gear or 4th gear -- it's the same technology, you're just running it at a slower clock speed. As I understand it, the memory and system processor all run at a multiple of the system clock. If Intel can't get the Camino chip to work at 800 Mhz (which is 6x faster than a 133Mhz system clock), then they'll slow the system clock to 100Mhz and now Camino is running at 600Mhz (still 6x the system clock). Ditto for the RDRAMs. This also means that the PIII in the system is running at a multiple of 100Mhz (e.g. 400Mhz, etc.) instead of a multiple of 133Mhz (533Mhz, etc.). In Camino and the RDRAMs case, they can all use the same part as is being manufactured today, assuming that they're running okay at 600Mhz.

Anyone else have any corrections to what I've said?

Dave B
