Another OT:

An account of one of my heroes of old: a Prophet and Statesman -- Daniel of the Babylonian captivity.

It pleased Darius to set over the kingdom an hundred and twenty princes, which should be over the whole kingdom; And over these three presidents; of whom Daniel was first: that the princes might give accounts unto them, and the king should have no damage.

Then this Daniel was preferred above the presidents and princes, because an excellent spirit was in him; and the king thought to set him over the whole realm. Then the presidents and princes sought to find occasion against Daniel concerning the kingdom; but they could find none occasion nor fault; forasmuch as he was faithful, neither was there any error or fault found in him.
(Daniel 6: 1-4)

Daniel was subsequently sentenced to death for praying in his home, which was against the megalomaniacal law of the Empire that no one should pray to his god for thirty days, except to the king. However, the ravenous lions found Daniel "inedible" and were restrained from even touching him. His enemies were later deemed delicious by them. Thus were both judged of God: Daniel vindicated, his enemies condemned.

I find unusual comfort in the story of his life. He embodies utter nobility and competence as a politician. It gives me hope about what can be. But, would such a man as Daniel survive in our system? The answer is in our hearts.
