Butterfly, Straddle, Strangle Condor or whatever. Any spread approach is fine and the more variety in spreads selected the better. This will allow us to observe the real-life behavior of these spreads over time vs. the theoretical discussions which don't capture a lot of the "real life" issues like margin and bid/ask differences.

I would just prefer not using long or short positions in the underlying to any great extent since since that defeats the purpose of many of the great spreads. However, a small position in the underlying to balance delta or whatever is OK.
