All, I came across a number of remarkable, even astounding, statements in the news article I posted in my preceding post:

techstocks.com

In their haste to demonstrate what they can do if they really put their minds to it, these MSO officials are making some gross disclaimers, IMO, against the very model that they've collaborated on for the past I don't know how many years. In another, they are admitting to some capabilities that they would be better served to downplay. The two comments that stick out in my mind follow:

>>"Building DOCSIS modems into the set-top boxes is something that doesn't have a real clear business model, as far as we're concerned," Chiddix said.<<

Duh... (and I never say Duh... )

Weren't the DOCSIS drafts, then standards, written by these very same MSOs? Didn't they hold the feet of every cable modem and stb vendor to the fire, until they complied?

And then there's this piece of wisdom:

>>"We'll support the proprietary modems where those systems have been deployed, as long as they fit into some tier of service," Chiddix said. "If we set aside 6 megahertz for the proprietary system and 6 MHz for DOCSIS, the two can live side-by-side."

This is all that AOL has to see, along with MindSpring and about 4,500 other ISPs, when an MSO [or its ISP] claims that they can't accommodate another tenant on their system. Oi !

Re: biz.yahoo.com

Can you of you industry folks explain how programmable logic on a chipset can work its way around the DSL distance problem? Just curious.

Hopefully, the PacBell boys will purchasing these guys ASAP. See biz.yahoo.com
