I don't think you can reinstall 95 without doing a
total reboot.
You should save all your files before you reinstall it.
At least I think.

stephen,

i was hoping someone with more knowledge than me could answer your questions, but while we wait for that to happen <gg>, here are a few thoughts regarding your probs.

1) try right-clicking the recycle bin icon and select properties. search through the option settings on each tab and see if there is anything there that may point you toward the problem.

2) go to start, find, and type in volume control. you'll find it if it's still on your drive. you can then right click on it in the displayed list and select create shortcut on desktop.

3) same as 2 above for real player. might try uninstalling it and doing another install. i think real player's latest free version is g2, so you could upgrade to that.

stephen, are you currently running any kind of system utilities suite, like norton's? sounds to me like you may have some windows problems that a good system doctor software suite could clean right up.

anyway, just trying to take a stab at it with you. hope some of this helps!

"My RealPlayer no longer works"

Do you have any sound at all? Do you get the Windows jingle when Windows starts? I've had problems that seem like there are conflicts sometimes between RealPlayer, Microsofts Media Player, and my sound card configuration where I lose all my sound. I have to go back and reload my sound card software.

"My recycle bin is inoperative."

Do you get the same problem when you go directly to your recycle bin; ie My Computer-C:-Recycled? Or could it be a problem with the short cut on your desktop?

Good evening,

In response to the Recycle Bin problem, I've seen that pop up over the years where either the icon itself disappears, or is replaced by something else. If (as someone else mentioned), right-clicking on it, and selecting properties doesn't do anything, you might have a system file problem, that a re-install could fix. Utility programs like Norton can fix things like that, however, on systems with alot of software installed and specific settings already set-up, they can often create more problems than they solve. I don't exactly recommend them unless you install it on a clean system and/or know how to use them quite well.

The sound problem is interesting. If your sound still works but the little volume icon is gone from the system tray, try going to your Control Panel (From Start Menu / Settings), and selecting the Multimedia Icon. From there, on the Audio tab, there should be a little box allowing you to select whether or not you want to be able to show the volume control on your taskbar. Ensure that it is checked off. If everyone is 'greyed' out, your sound card most likely has a problem, and the driver for it might need to be re-installed, or the card itself might have to be replaced. Check the Device Manager under the System properties to look for problems. As you mentioned, Real Player is probably related to that problem.

If it comes down to Re-installing Windows 95, you can do so, and it often does solve problems, but I would still recommend backing up _ALL_ data files beforehand, as well as realizing that some programs you had installed _might_ not work after the re-install.

So if you still want to, you'll have to check to see what kind of Windows 95 you have. Version A? B? Upgrade or OEM version. Re-installs can go differently depending on what you are currently running.

Sorry for taking so long...Hope this helps.

Richard
