I'm wrestling with that issue right at this moment, and feel the same way. I've decided to use 'typical price' ( (h+l+c)/3 ). I don't know that it makes all that much difference, particularly on longer time periods. But, as you say, only focusing on closing price -- so often with truly randomness ending at 'bid' or 'ask' -- just rubs me wrong.

Please, gurus, a humble student begs for answers....
