I don't know, Gerald, I remember reading the Microsoft clone proposal from you first, and I used to follow this stuff pretty closely, you know. It was meant as a compliment. Sorry.

Cheers, Dan.

Split proposal?!

If such a thing is proposed, what kind of split would be realizable?

My belief is that Microsoft will probably turn out to be somewhat of a house of cards. By that I mean a number of things, but as a starting point :

1) Without the ability to rely on OS internals, applications will have to compete on their own merits (eventually). It should also bring about a drifting away from pure MS (perhaps we will see these things on UNIX one day).

2) The MS distributed computing initiative (i.e., DCOM, etc.) will tank since the mutually reinforcing MS imperative will no longer exist. This will also clear the way for, CORBA, JAVA, JAVA Beans, Enterprise Java Beans, and the use of the http data stream for application services. I foresee MS failing miserably in Internet space.

3) The OS part of MS will be forced to publish real interface specifications for things like software distribution and server functions. This will invite competition for the application piece.

Not to mention foreclosing on MS's ability to bully PC vendors and internet providers.

So what do you think? If they are to be split, how should it be done?
