CHICAGO -- Equity Office Properties Trust (EOP) received Internal Revenue Service approval to provide telecommunications services to its customers without violating rules for real estate investment trusts.

In a press release Tuesday, the company said revenue generated from telecommunications services will be deemed rents from real property under the IRS ruling. Equity Office also may participate business relationships with telecommunications service providers for various services.

The REIT will offer services from Winstar Communications Inc. (WCII) and Allied Riser Communications Inc. at many of its buildings.

Equity Office Properties Trust operates 286 buildings in 24 states and the District of Columbia.
