Hi Penni, thanks for worrying about me, but I think it will be fine. I did some more research on the place for my dad yesterday and called him back to let him know that it looked like Duke offered the best next step to try. She has glioblastoma multiforme, which has an extremely poor prognosis, so NIH sponsors a lot of clinical trials. That means that nothing is sure to work, because if there were something that looked like a sure winner, it would be unethical to let people with a fatal disease try something else. She has already had surgery, radiation, stereotactic radiation, and chemotherapy with thalidomide. Duke offers a procedure where they insert monoclonal antibodies with radioactive isotopes into the cavity where the cancer used to be, and the monoclonal antibodies carry the isotopes to the cancer cells. That looks like the thing she hasn't tried with the highest success rate. All it is, is buying her time until something else may be a cure, probably, although they have the occasional cure. It may buy her an additional 50 months, and she only has one or two. My dad had already calmed down a lot, he got to talk to the social workers so a two bedroom place was in the works, and he got to talk to Dr. Friedman, the head of the department, who impressed him, so he was through venting. They may bring a "young girl who is kind of a relative" to babysit. I would think if they were willing to pay enough, they could find whatever they needed, and they can afford it. I suggested letting my little brother come here, and my dad did not want him to be away from his mother and father, he thought that would be too big of a shock. As for me, the only question is when do I leave. I plan to take the boys and stay in a 2 bedroom suite in a hotel room, one that has a kitchenette, so I need to get a guide book from the library and start planning. I wish it were warmer, and we could go to the beach!
