<<Guns have the following uses: 1. Self-defense and defense of others in the home. 2. Sport (target shooting, hunting). 3. Killing varmints. 4. Killing dinner. 5. Assisting in the commission of crime. 6. Suicide. Only use number 5 is immoral. Why do you want to prevent law-abiding people from the lawful use of a useful tool? I realize I have not read the entire thread, but I promise not to harass you to death.>> Well, for promising not to harass me to death, you are off to an interesting start! Let's see, in terms of self-defense, police statistics show that your gun is more likely to be used against you than to protect you. I think hunting is an absolutely vile thing to do, and also kills and wounds quite a few innocent bystanders every year. Killing varmints who are actually endangering you is a legitimate use of guns. So Is Ish's reason--that he lives far from police protection. Killing dinner is the same as (2)hunting, which I already addressed. I think poor country people who cannot otherwise afford to eat have a legitimate reason to hunt dinner. Guns are used in the commission of crimes, not only premeditated crimes, but many crimes of passion--arguments that would certainly have never turned lethal without guns being available. This is a HUGE category of gun nastiness. Suicide is a legitimate use of a gun, but pretty lethal. Since suicide is almost always a passing fancy (in the sense that depression is a treatable illness, and life does improve), it seems a disservice to have guns lying around when they cause a higher fatality rate than other suicide attempts do. Hey, you forgot about accidental gun deaths! Do you think that is immoral, or just part of the deal? How would you feel if your child was killed while playing with a friend?
