Let's see if we can get your system back up and running...

The command in your CONFIG.SYS is pretty standard. (DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS) It's a memory manager loaded by Windows automatically. If you don't have to, don't play with it :)

Regarding your tape backup software, even if you are using an older device which only came with DOS software, you might want to go to their website to check if they have current software that would work with your drive. Having to back up Windows 95/98 data in DOS mode really sucks, because like you said, you get your file names truncated down to 8.3 format. (Instead of "Good SI Post.doc", you get "GOODSI~1.DOC") If you are backing up actual Windows system files and directories under DOS, they're pretty useless, since alot use the extended characters. Get that 95 software ASAP.

I don't recognize the Control Panel error, but it doesn't sound too healthy. If I were you, I would try to re-install Windows (after backing up my data)...if that doesn't fly, make a note of what you had installed and be prepared for a clean install sometime in the near future.

Your system might be warning you of impending doom. Been there, done that. <g>
