handing their community'sinternet future over to an unregulated, monopolistic provider
Nothing against you Jay, just about the topic--
How long are people going to be allowed to spew nonsense like this without any sensible well organized reply?
The bottom line is that the people selling horse buggys are freaking out over the invention of the automobile and asking the automakers to lease them some of their manufacturing lines so they can make cars too.
Dialup ISP's like Mindspring who were so blind as to not understand that they were in a business that was about to be run over by better technologies were total fools. Why should they be rewarded for their blindness?
Far from being a monopoly, cable internet service is going to be in for the fight of their lives against other competing technologies, dsl wireless etc. And there is no reason they too might not be competing against better technology from someone else willing to spend the money to string fiber. Why is that not obvious?
Even dialup is competition for cable because many people are not willing (yet) to pay the broadband rates.
The additional burden of regulation and having to figure out how to service multiple ISP's (who offer nothing ATHM cant offer) could easily destroy cables' ability to compete.
As I understand it, the MSO's get a pretty significant portion of the $40ish/month service cost anyway, so where are they planning to control the costs? By telling the MSO's how much they are allowed to charge for leasing the line? What a total nightmare.
What annoys me is that it all sounds so damn "reasonable" and "fair" to prevent that nasty "monopoly" to give people "choice" yet it is total garbage and I've yet to see any clearly phrased response that will shake people out of it. The old guard has such a powerful influence.
One thing I gotta give T credit for is that they show not the slightest sign yet of caving into the absurdity.
