Just like every other industry, there has been a lot of consolidation in paper. IP is in a position to be the acquirer and not the acquired. Of course the theory is through economies of scale and larger market share manufacturers can better control pricing and become more profitable thus adding shareholder value. I think it is safe to say this will indeed happen. US paper manufacturers will be allowed to build domestic monopolies to remain competitive with the emerging foreign powerhouses. The Enso/Stora merger challenges IPs dominance as the worlds largest paper manufacturer.

Personally I am in favor of a specialized strategy of being the best in one given segment. I am not to familiar with Weyerhaeuser's moves, but I know they make a good uncoated offset sheet. They however are only a minor player in my dealings.
