BMC Software's PATROL for Microsoft Systems Management Server -- SMS -- Ensures SMS Availability and Performance; Works with Microsoft to Deliver WMI-Enabled Solutions
HOUSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 15, 1999--BMC Software Inc. (Nasdaq:BMCS), the leading developer of software solutions that improve the availability, performance and recoverability of business-critical applications and data, today announced the PATROL for Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) product for monitoring and managing SMS. This is BMC Software's first comprehensive product to utilize Microsoft's Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) technology, derived from the Web-Based Enterprise Management (WBEM) initiative. The PATROL for SMS product, teamed with SMS, can quickly resolve and correct failures across enterprise applications and databases. This product complements the already released PATROL Adapter for WBEM.
The PATROL for SMS product will monitor and manage the health of SMS, including job status information, site-level events, MIF-file process statistics, in-memory queues, and the validity of data in the SMS database. It utilizes the PATROL Console to perform a variety of SMS administrator functions, thereby simplifying management from an operator's perspective. By performing routine database clean-up and purge tasks, as well as resubmitting failed jobs, the PATROL for SMS product increases availability, performance and reliability of the SMS product. Paired with the PATROL for Microsoft SQL Server product, it can be used to monitor the database components of the SMS environment, or it can be combined with other PATROL products to provide enterprise-wide management of business-critical applications.
"Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2.0 is a leader in change and configuration management for large Windows enterprises. Its critical position benefits from the robust level of availability monitoring and management possible with BMC Software's PATROL for Systems Management Server," said Jim Ewel, Director, Windows 2000 Server Enterprise and Infrastructure Marketing, at Microsoft Corporation. "Furthermore, BMC's use of Microsoft's Windows Management Instrumentation adds value by facilitating better integration with SMS and delivering significant customization capability to enterprise IS organizations."
"We have worked with BMC and are using BMC Software PATROL products to help keep our applications running. We are excited about the announcement of BMC's PATROL for Microsoft Systems Management Server and the way it takes advantage of and improves on the Microsoft technologies," said Richard Dearman, research programmer at University of Illinois. "We plan on using this product to manage our SMS 2.0 environment and feel that any company using SMS could really benefit from this product."
BMC Software and Microsoft Work to Develop WMI-enabled Solutions
BMC Software continues to work closely with Microsoft on WMI and to develop WMI-enabled solutions for Microsoft Windows NT. BMC Software now has an engineer located at Microsoft's Redmond headquarters and will continue to participate in design reviews for WMI. BMC Software will also integrate the PATROL Management Suite of products, BEST/1 performance analysis product and BMC Software application recovery products with the WMI infrastructure. The first BMC Software WMI-enabled product enhancement to hit the streets was the PATROL Adapter for WBEM, released in October 1998. The PATROL Adapter enables PATROL to both consume and provide management data to WMI. Such capabilities are useful for the management of WMI itself, as well as providing better data integration of management applications and new ways to deliver customized reports and views into Windows or browser-based consoles. "By working with Microsoft at the early stages of the WMI initiative, we are at the forefront of Windows NT and Microsoft BackOffice management," said Bob Kruger, vice president of Windows NT and E-commerce solutions for BMC Software. "Utilizing the WMI infrastructure in the PATROL for SMS product allows us to ensure that SMS is available to do its change and configuration management tasks."
