Educators From Around the World Experience the Latest in Educational Technology ORLANDO, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 15, 1999--As a new millennium quickly approaches and teaching is revolutionized by computers and the Internet, thousands of educators from around the world will experience the latest in educational technology first hand at the 19th annual Florida Educational Technology Conference at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, March 18-20, featuring former astronaut Sally Ride as keynote speaker. FETC is one of the largest conferences dedicated to educational technology in the United States and provides a unique opportunity for educators to integrate different technologies across the curriculum, from kindergarten to college, including exposure to the latest hardware and educational software. Last year's conference attracted more than 14,000 participants and 3,000 educational vendors. "FETC is one of the most exciting conferences a teacher can have the opportunity to attend," said FETC President and Executive Director Michael Eason. "We provide intensive hands-on workshops, informative breakout sessions and an exhibit hall that showcases current, new and emerging technologies to prepare teachers for the classroom of the future." The keynote speaker for this year's opening session will be former NASA astronaut Sally Ride, the first American woman in space. In 1983, Ride served as a member of the space shuttle Challenger crew and helped perform the shuttle's first satellite deployment and retrieval using the craft's robot arm. Ride served on another shuttle crew in 1984 and was assigned to a third mission before it was interrupted by the Challenger accident. After serving as a member of the Presidential Committee investigating the tragedy, Ride was assigned to NASA headquarters to work on long-range planning for the space program. Ride is an accomplished author and is currently a physics professor at the University of California, San Diego. She is a member of the President's Committee of Advisors on Science and Technology and is former director of the California Space Institute, a research institute of the University of California. FETC '99 will offer more than 200 hour-long concurrent sessions, allowing conference participants to choose from a variety of classes -- from desktop video conferencing to exploring distance learning to innovations in teaching math -- where they can learn specific strategies on how to effectively incorporate technology into their curriculum. In addition, half- and full-day workshops will be offered in a hands-on or demonstration format to provide an optimal learning experience through supplemental training and awareness. During the conference, over 350 companies -- occupying more than 840 booths -- will fill almost 200,000 square feet of exhibit space in the Convention Center, providing attendees an opportunity to preview and purchase the latest educational technology hardware and software to enhance teaching and learning at all levels. Eight of the world's foremost corporate leaders in educational technology are major sponsors of the conference, including Apple Computer, Inc.; AT&T Learning Network; Compaq Computer Corporation; Computer Curriculum Corporation; Dell Computer Corporation; Knowledge Adventure; The Learning Company; and Microsoft Corporation. "FETC allows educators the opportunity to experience educational technology they may not have access to otherwise," said FETC Conference Chairman Bob Bedford. "We provide them with the tools to effectively integrate the technology of tomorrow into today's classrooms." Teachers can pre-register for the conference through Feb. 12 by calling 850/894-3810 or on-line at the conference web page at www.fetc.org. After Feb. 12, attendees must register on-site at the conference.
