Radical Change at Toshiba -- Kenji Tsuda, Tokyo

...Toshiba is restructuring not only its semiconductor division, but the whole organization itself. The firm plans to make the divisions governing its wide-ranging business portfolio – which includes information and communications systems, components, power and industrial systems, and consumer products – independent in April 1999.

This move will eliminate the system of mutual dependency which has for so long been a part of the firm's operational structure. Katsuaki Nagaike, senior manager, Management Planning, Toshiba Corporate Planning Division, comments, β€œIn the past we have taken the approach of unifying our divisions. However, products change every three months within the IT industry, and every 10 years within the power plant industry. Today we face an age of global competition. We have to retain global competitiveness. This is why we plan to divide our firm into nine small companies.” He expects that this move will foster both independent thinking and speedier decisions, thus enhancing the firm's global competitiveness.

Of these Japanese manufacturers, none have plans to fire their employees, but instead will freeze salaries over the coming year. As another measure, Matsushita has provided its middle-managers with a ticket of exchange for its own products for their year-end bonuses for 1998.
