How to Detect Y2K spin

<< Seems like everyone is claiming they're Y2K-compliant without actually using those words. It's part of a linguistic erosion that's been happening in America for the last last 20 years, it has become a way of saying nothing while appearing to convey meaning.

First called, "doublespeak," the linguistic art of getting people to think you said one thing while you actually say something else has achieved a new level of unfortunate mastery. This, combined with the unquestioning acceptance of vague Y2K statements has led to a bizarre situation where all kinds of Y2K compliance claims are being made, but few of them mean anything. -- cont'd -- >>

Hi MSB,

Naw ... not lying, Y2Kspeak ... kinda like not knowing what the meaning of the word 'is' is. < vbg >

Besides, I am from north of the border, and we have the Mounties trying to nail his boss to the tainted blood scandel ... Remember, the Mounties always get their man ... it just sometimes takes a century or two.

Regards,

John

DUBAI, Feb 15 (AFP) - The Gulf emirate of Dubai said Monday it will manufacture "the world"s longest" gold chain for its four-week shopping festival which starts March 18.

The chain weighing 50 kilograms (110 pounds) will be worth half a million dollars. It will be sold off in sections of whatever length the customer wants.

Dubai, which prides itself as "the city of gold" and is a leading redistribution centre for the precious metal, also aims to enter the Guinness Book of Records for the world"s "biggest dining table" and "longest sofa."

The emirate hopes to attract more than two million visitors for the annual festival, the fourth of its kind.

Apart from the Guinness bids, the main highlight will be the Dubai World Cup, dubbed "the world"s richest horse race" with a purse of five million dollars. It is to be run on March 28.
