Due to higher appreciation of U.S. stocks I too am way over the 20% limit. At times I am concerned that I am overweight in US tech stocks, but I am reluctant to sell. I may in future consider selling and immediately rebuying during one of the Nazdaq's big drops to reset my book value at a lower value and reduce my holding of US stocks somewhat. I'm happy now to have a big weighting of US stocks, but that may change. I wish I had known about the trick of contacting the old broker to establish old book values when changing accounts. I recently had to sell some US stocks when changing accounts.

I am self employed an my income varies widely from year-to-year. Several years ago during a bad year I took some money out of the RRSP and use it for only foreign investments. I have done well. What about converting RRSP money into Tbills and using margin to buy more foreign stocks on the outside?

Jim I noticed your assesment of US vs Cdn value in your RRSP portfolio. I have a similar situation. I thought you might want to know that recent changes in Canada allow you to increase the % of foreign content above the stated 20% without penalty. You can do this by adding a "Labour Sponsored fund" to your RRSP account, in addition to the pretty good tax advantage of the LSF you are now allowed triple that value in foreign content above the 20% cap.. Talk to your broker or financial planner ASAP if you want to do this . Feb 28 deadline you know.. .
Good Luck,,,Northern Cougar
