I agree as to the vagueness of what is a bot. The list I posted today was from a CNBC story on shopping bots. I suppose technically a bot is a search engine, nothing more. Maybe a boundary is whether you can buy stuff from the bot, or it just directs you to a list.

As I have stated elsewhere, I don't think that placement fees are a big issue in share evaluation for any of these companies. Its another way for them to make money and that is mostly a good thing. If they wind up making a LOT of money from placement fees, well, maybe that is their future. Not that different from rental space on AOL, for example.
