I agree with that assessment, which is why I own some ATHM as a hedge against AOL. They are the only viable competitor to AOL, but for them to succeed, they have to do everything right and have some luck besides. They have to hope cable is the answer to broadband; that they can keep their current cable monopoly; and that investors will not get tired of waiting while they grow into their valuation.

Besides, the projections I have seen are for 16M U.S. broadband subscribers by 2002, of which 80% will be on cable. That means ATHM might have 10M or so subs in three years, a bit over half of what AOL has now, and that does not count the 50M eyeballs through compuserve, netscape, and ISQ.
