I don't mind trying to define politically correct. It is a term of opprobrium, to begin with, at least I think it is. I don't think people who are politically correct call themselves that. It has to do with a certain type of censorship, of behavior and speech. Political correctness starts out as politeness, and even kindness, and then just goes too far. One large component of political correctness is nomenclature. What shall it be correct to call people based on the color of their skin, or their nationality, or their accent? What shall it be correct to call people based on their gender? And so forth. It also has to do with how we may, and may not, discuss other people's individual characteristics. Another large component of political correctness has to do with how we treat other people, and what that means. How do you treat a person of the opposite sex, how do you treat subordinates, what kinds of speech are appropriate and which are offensive? Another large component of political correctness has to do with which cultural artifacts are worthy of preservation, and which are not. It sounds so innocent, because I have deliberately described it in non-inflammatory terms. I could describe it in ways that would start flame wars, and that's the problem. Political correctness is about things that make people really passionate but it pretends that it has the only true way of dealing with those things, and that causes the other people to get really angry.
