Analysts like Telstra CEO's science bent

MELBOURNE, Feb 16 (Reuters) - Australian telecom giant Telstra Corp Ltd caught industry analysts by surprise by naming Ziggy Switkowski as its new chief executive, but they praised the company for anointing a man with a technological orientation.

Switkowski, a nuclear physicist and ex-chief of Telstra's main rival, Optus Communications , had been seen as a contender for the top job at Australia's biggest telecommunications group when he joined as head of international operations in 1997.

But analysts said it was unlikely he would be named chief executive because he had entered the industry only in 1996.

''It sends a clear message they've gone for technical expertise at the expense of someone seen as being a very powerful management figure, perhaps from the U.S.,'' said Mark Topy, senior industrial analyst with stockbrokers Johnson Taylor.
