fcc info on adsl market rollout...

fcc.gov

BOCs and GTE, for example, have announced plans to offer
broadband to approximately twenty million homes this year. SBC has announced a "massive
rollout" of ADSL, "targeting more than 500 central offices and 9.5 million residential and business
customers by year-end. In Bell Atlantic's service area, ADSL is available now to some
customers in the Washington, D.C., area and in Pittsburgh, with plans to add Philadelphia and the
Hudson waterfront of New Jersey next year. Bell Atlantic has formed a marketing alliance with
America Online, Inc., in which Bell Atlantic hopes, by the end of 1999, to make ADSL available
to seven million subscribers. Its goal is to offer ADSL to fourteen million customers by the end
of 2000. And BellSouth has announced plans to offer ADSL service available to 1.7 million
customers in 30 markets by the end of 1998, and in 23 additional markets in 1999.

<<SO if you want to really blame WSTL for not having alot of CO business it is directly related to MOT & TXN chip delivery BS....>>

No, I would think that shareholders would want to look to missteps by management (what is the saying "fool me once, twice...") If management could not arrange the deals to cover themselves THEY ARE AT FAULT. Don't try and blame it on SMART companies like TI and MOT.

[Questions]

SKi brought up a good point. Read through his posts concerning the network disclosue and John Grady - ADSL product manager BA. The network disclosure says ALA 1Q 99. I found that disturbing a month ago when I found it because WSTL/ALA compat. not ready till summer. Who would provide CPE until then?? NY seems like huge market to start using DMT if your are not satisfied with ALA CPE. Singapore seems to be satisfied with ALA CPE. Also, the discussion with John Grady is what gave me a sick feeling in my stomach! He said ALA was providing "complete solution", i.e. CO and CPE and that BEL would probably use other vendors in the future. I don't doubt that WSTL would get some of that business, but if it comes out in a press release all ALA with no mention of WSTL and MZ not allowed to say different, then hello 2.75 again easy!! Even so, I would like to stick with it if only for TI/AMTX, MOT, and LU reasons, but very difficult with current stock action. Please weigh in on Grady and possible BA press action.

Also, on another topic. As I was sifting through old TI, MOT, AMTX, and GTE press releases, I noticed that ORCTF was never mentioned as being a trial participant. I thought it strange since GTE picked them. Did ORCTF just win because of Frame Relay issue in GTE networks?

The Telcos really wanted a true DSP based chip for the CO but the clock is ticking and they can't wait any longer, that doesn't mean WSTL won't be back in the C.O. hunt when TXN delivers

DR.TECH, thanks for general info, but what is your best guestimate of TXN availability. I realize no one may know the truth about this, but I'm sure your opinion is better than mine. Would you say the decision to go ahead with Ala makes the February-March time framework for TXN only a fiction in your opinion? I feel that TXN is vital to the eventual success of Westell in ADSL.

Sorry if your weekend was disrupted,
Michael

Dr. Tech:

I don't see how Westell is going to compete against 3COM in the CPE/ATU-R business. It seems 3COM won the BellSouth RFP for CPE/ATU-R modems.

[New PR firm]

I hope WSTL is paying by the release and not the hour! Eerie silence like that before BC and JPC announcements!

[feb 17- march 31]

Not one positive announcement by march 18. Meanwhile, the likes of Microsoft invest in startups who are late to the party, but still get financing from the big guys. WSTL is forgotten stock everywhere! They do not even move when entire ADSL sector moves. Pathetic! I am surprised the local Rotary Club would invite Zionts to speak much less Merill Lynch. If there is anything good going on, you can bet that only Penny and a few analysts will know about it. WSTL shareholders outside of Penny are basically spit on. The website is pathetic as well, doesn't even list strategic partnerships or any installs. What a joke! Here's hoping for a dead cat bounce. Lucky I have such a low cost average in this POS.
