Nancy,

Thank you for your cool-headed, thoughtful reply. And I agree: personal application of any spiritual teaching, whatever the vehicle, is the ultimate test of that teaching's truth. And if I understand you correctly, I also agree that whatever brings hope, if only for that reason alone, is "true". The cost/benefit analysis of pragmatism is, for me, a valid way of assessing the truth value of religious claims and has, on many occasions, kept me in a position of faith when my academic training would impel me to abandon it.

For what it is worth, I, as many with an academic training in religion, will no doubt always struggle with the very varied, and often ambiguous, media by which the message of God, the "good news", is conveyed. But that that message is worth heeding, and living out however one interprets it, is a deep-seated belief of mine. I am of the opinion, forged through experiences both painful and beautiful, that little else in life makes much sense, ultimately, apart from hearing, understanding, and applying personally the word of God.

Respectfully yours, Thomas.
