The licensing scheme I would buy in exchange for the following provisions.
1) The licensing agency is fair and liberal - i.e. you get your license unless you are obviously disabled or a convicted violent felon.
2) The license is a one-time fee - no taxation schemes.
3) I gain in return the perpetual right of ownership and of heritage - meaning my guns can be transferred to my dependents.
4) The license is to operate a firearm. Ownership without operation need not be regulated in any way. Thus my unlicensed daughter could gain ownership of my AR-15 . If she ever cares to shoot it however - there's the license.
5) If I kill someone with my licensed firearm - the courts will presume I acted prudently unless a crime case can be constructed.

I think the middle ground is that some people are dirtballs. But not all people are dirtballs. And those of use who are not dirtballs do not want to be treated like dirtballs.
