A new wireless deal for CSCO:

Omnitel seals Internet wireless deal with Cisco

MILAN, Feb 15 (Reuters) - Italian mobile phone operator
Omnitel and leading computer-networking company Cisco Systems
Inc CSCO.O said on Monday they had agreed to develop a new
Internet wireless service together.

In a joint statement, the two companies said the new service
would offer clients the possibility to access the Internet
including data, voice and video communications with their mobile
phones.

Last week, Cisco announced it would develop a similar
service with U.S.-wireless operator Motorola MOT.N. Omnitel
said its agreement with Cisco would imply indirect cooperation
with Motorola.

Motorola also announced last week a deal with Nextel
Communications Inc NXTL.O and Netscape Communications Corp
NSCP.O to offer a wireless telephone package combining voice,
data and Internet services.

Omnitel and Cisco said they had prepared a three-year plan
for their project and expect to publish the initial results
after six months.

"The alliance aims to develop innovative network
technologies for integrated voice-data-video infrastructures,"
they said in the statement.

"We will work towards the development of an IP (Internet
Protocol) based communications infrastructure and the definition
and establishment of new standards which will make Internet
access easier."

Last year, Omnitel -- jointly controlled by Italy's Olivetti
OLIV.MI and Germany's Mannesmann MMNG.F -- launched a
service that allows customers to call the United States and
Britain using the Internet.
