Fire Wire is a high speed connection developed by Apple that is both competing and complementary of USB (Universal Serial Bus). Like USB devices, you are supposed to get true plug and play capability. But it is supposed to be much faster -- good for sending digital video signals. Apple has put it on their new PowerMac's (not the iMac) and Sony is looking to use it to connect Audio/Video components. It should be open to Dell for a licensing fee. I'm not aware of any FireWire devices yet, so Dell may be waiting on that.

For more info, check out Adaptec's explanation of Fire Wire:

Best regards,
Harry
