NBN Insight: Fibre optics looking up

TORONTO-- Explosive demand from the cable, Internet and telecommunications
sector is making the fibre-optics industry a lucrative place to be. Few companies
have been benefiting more from this boom than JDS Fitel.

Since last October, JDS has rocketed skyward on the
Toronto Stock Exchange. The stock has climbed from a low
of about $15 in the fall to a high of $67.40.

Though JDS has been losing a little bit of its altitude in recent
days. It closed Monday at $59.75, a drop of 95 cents.

The stock received a further boost last month, when JDS Fitel announced "a
merger of equals" with Uniphase Corporation of San Jose, California. If the
merger meets with shareholder approval, the deal is expected to close in June.

NBN's Jeannie Lee spoke to the Chairman and Co-CEO of JDS Fitel, Jozef
Straus. He believes the new JDS Uniphase Corporation is ideally positioned in
the industry. He expects the company will continue to grow both by acquisition
and innovation.

Hi Glenn,

Nothing further on the BW piece, but you reminded me of the photo of JDS in last year's annual report. I concluded, upon seeing him in front of the new mfg. facility, smiling so broadly, that any further due diligence was completely unnecessary. He's a winner.

Best. Ray
