Just a correction to my fast notes while he was talking.

One of the questioners suggested that the very large companies have already bought new hardware for YK2 compliance and their business will dry up in June/July. The medium and smaller size businesses will not purchase new hardware. There will be a meltdown in hardware sales in the 2nd half of 1999.

EP answered that there were many theories floating around. But CPQ knew of many very large companies that will be buying into the 2nd half 1999. There was also a mass of medium and small sized businesses throughout the world which would need to catch up with compliance, by replacing existing sytems or adding on. In addition to this business he thought that 2nd half 1999 would bring very strong seasonal sales reinforced by low cost computers and appliances. He pointed again to the new trend of giving away free PC's or of companies providing PC's below cost. The purpose of these promotions was to generate traffc or revenues from other products. In so far as CPQ was sellign these low cost products, it would benefit. The threat this new trend might pose from other manufacturers or to the stucture of the market could be overestimated. Nothing is for free and any imbalances will right themselves.
