Open Port Enables Store and Forward IP Fax Over Lucent Technologies PortMaster Remote Access Concentrators

February 18, 1999

CHICAGO, Feb. 17 Open Port
Technology(R) Inc. announced today that
Lucent Technologies PortMaster(R) remote
access concentrators now support its
Harmony(R) NSP IP fax software. The
integrated solution, which is enabled by Open
Port's Access Server Protocol interface and a
simple firmware upgrade to the PortMaster,
will allow service providers to deploy
store-and-forward Internet faxing
capabilities, such as broadcast fax and
never-busy fax using Open Port's patented
least cost routing technology.

According to International Data Corp., faxes
comprise 25 percent of total phone charges,
for a total market of $91 billion annually.
Internet fax revenues are anticipated to
grow from $150 million in 1998 to as much as
$13 billion by the year 2001, with companies
realizing cost savings of 30-70 percent.
Service providers are showing interest in
store-and-forward IP fax technology because
it allows them to better utilize bandwidth at
off-peak hours.

"Service providers want to maximize the
hardware and software infrastructure
investments they've made by deploying new
revenue-generating services such as
Internet fax," said Cheryl Mayberry, senior
vice president and general manager of
worldwide sales and marketing for Open Port.
"By working together, Lucent Technologies
and Open Port will help providers increase
their returns on infrastructure investments.
The PortMaster 3 is a leader among small-
and mid-sized Internet service providers, and
the PortMaster 4 extends our reach into the
large-carrier segment. This business
relationship not only strengthens our position
in the market, but more importantly,
enhances benefits for our customers."

"The delivery of applications such as fax over
the Internet offers huge potential for
Internet service providers," said Marty Likier,
product manager for the Lucent PortMaster
product line. "This relationship will help ISPs
explore new services without having to alter
their basic infrastructure. We look forward to
continuing to work with Open Port on
next-generation IP applications."

The Harmony NSP solution is a set of
products and services that allows ISPs and
their resellers to create new revenue streams
by offering Internet fax services. With the
Harmony NSP suite of software modules, ISPs
and resellers can link to an Internet
backbone provider for delivery of faxes,
dramatically expanding their network reach.
The transfer of faxes to the backbone
provider's network is transparent to the fax
senders, allowing the ISP or reseller to
customize the fax offering according to their
customers' needs. Customer trials on the
PortMaster platform will begin in March 1999
with general availability following shortly
thereafter.

LOCAL LOOP INSTALLATIONS GROWING RAPIDLY, SAYS STUDY

February 18, 1999

TELECOMWORLDWIRE: Ovum, an independent analyst
group, says that in 1998, about 72m local
loop lines were installed globally, while by
2005 the installations are expected to grow
to 195m, driven by strong growth in data
communications as well as by the
development of alternative technologies and
the increasing importance of mobility. New
research by the company also expects a
huge demand for broadband technologies and
while initially new broadband lines will be
mainly by fibre to business customers, the
larger market will consist of broadband
provision, mostly by ADSL, to residential
customers.
