Vitesse Dramatically ReducesCost of 10Gb/s Design; New ICs to Drive High Speed Market TowardCost-Effectiveness February 23, 1999 07:59 AM CAMARILLO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 23, 1999--Vitesse Semiconductor Corp. VTSS Tuesday introduced the VSC8073 and the VSC8074 16-bit Mux/Demux chipset for OC-192 and STM-64 applications. By offering the devices in industry standard plastic packaging, Vitesse has made the cost of implementing the physical layer at 10Gb/s one-fifth the cost of comparable alternatives while maintaining the requirements necessary to implement systems at that speed. The chipset allows manufacturers of telecommunication, dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM), undersea transmission and test equipment to produce a more cost-effective solution without sacrificing system performance. "As the market for OC-192, STM-64 and other 10Gb/s systems grows, the cost of 10Gb/s components will become increasingly important," stated Gregg Borodaty, Vitesse director of marketing for Telecom products. "By using our proven, reliable and highly manufacturable Gallium Arsenide process and industry-standard packaging, we are able to offer products today at a much lower cost than any competing alternatives." The VSC8073 10Gb/s multiplexer integrates a 16:1 multiplexer with synchronous timing control together with a phase detector. The phase detector can be used with an external loop filter and Voltage Controlled Oscillator (VCO) to generate the bit rate clock. The VSC8074 10Gb/s demultiplexer integrates a 1:16 demultiplexer with synchronous timing control. This integrated circuit also has input data sensitivity of less than 500mV peak to peak on high-speed data inputs. Both devices provide a fully differential 622MHz interface on the parallel side to ease implementation by alleviating system noise concerns. Together, this chipset supports 10Gb/s data rates, and can also support Forward Error Correction (FEC) rates of 11Gb/s and above. "Vitesse is focused on providing a complete end-to-end solution at 10 Gb/s, just as we do at 2.5Gb/s, where we offer the most complete 2.5Gb/s solutions available today," added Borodaty. "The VSC8073 and VSC8074 are the first devices in this series of components that will help to enable the growth of the 10Gb/s market." These 5V ICs are available in low-cost, industry-standard 14mm 80-pin PQFP packages. Both ICs are fully compliant with SONET/SDH specifications and are being premiered at the Vitesse booth during the Optical Fibre Conference at the San Diego Conference Center. Samples of the VSC8074 are available now. Samples of the VSC8073 will be available in April 1999. Production for both devices is scheduled for May 1999. This chipset, including the VSC8073 and VSC8074, is priced at $500 in quantities of 1,000.
