Dan,

CANNES, France (Reuters) - U.S. microprocessor group Intel Corp (Nasdaq:INTC - news) will officially launch its new Pentium III product on Feb. 26 following a big Feb. 17 preview event in San Jose, Calif.

An Intel spokeswoman said Thursday that after the launch date computer manufacturers would have PCs with Pentium III available for sale.

She added that Intel had not yet decided on the pricing of the Pentium III but that it should be the mainstream product of the company by the end of 1999.

The Pentium III will be launched with clock rates of 450 to 500 megahertz. Intel aims to boost the clock rates of its products to one gigahertz, but the spokeswoman said it was not sure whether this would be a Pentium III version or another product.

---------

This now places the Pentium behind the latest PowerPC in processor power for sure. Maybe the Mysterious Merced will save the day, bundled with the latest outbreak of Windows.

Might be a good year for IBM if they start pumping out PowerPC-based servers which can outperform any Wintel offering for the same price. This year IBM should begin leaning on MSFT until they squeal.

Cheers,

Norm

Harsh? Who me? Perish the thought! ;)

Who knows, the next election is 21 months, if the Republicans can get their act together and Bill backs the right horse, Rick might get his old job back and flush the suit down the toilet. I'm not sure if he could deal with the states by fiat, but I'm sure he'd be willing to try.

I read today somewhere that Microsoft is assembling a campaign fund to defeat Al Gore in 2000. I guess they'll call it GoreD PAC (Gore Defeat Political Action Committee -- not a bad acronym, eh?). ;)

Anyway, I am sure Gore and Gephardt (who isn't running for #1, but would probably make a great VP candidate to energize that Big Labor Demo base) are quaking in their boots at the thought of having to rouse the populace against Big Software. ;)

Speaking of states and localities, there's the situation faced locally here in L.A. by James R. "Impeachment" Rogan. Jim is the kind of guy who likes to play the margins -- as in the 3,000 vote margin that he barely squeaked by with in the last election. With the Wall Street Journal having revealed that it's payback time for the Clinton Administration and all, you will be pleased to know that planted articles and editorials excoriating him have already started appearing in the local rag. (No, not the L.A. Times, I mean the REALLY local rag.)

Now, Jim is not much of a libertarian. Rumor has it he used to be (gag!) a Democrat. But, I'm sure that a few grand from up North will make him see the light. ;)
