More Hitachi News from DM Review Magazine: COMMENTS FROM HITACHI EXEC. HITACHI IS LEADING THE SALES CHARGE WITH NUCLEUS (BIG NAMES AND DEALS IN EUROPE SO FAR) DM Review is Excited to Introduce the Data Warehouse 100! by Mary Jo Nott In this issue, we are pleased to feature the executives of the Data Warehouse 100. We asked for comments in response to the question, "As a leader in data warehousing and business intelligence, to what do you attribute your success and where do you see your company and the industry in the next two years?" Their answers to this question are truly insightful and may be a help in your future planning and product selection. It is not often that you can read the views of the top executives in the software industry to help you formulate your business intelligence strategies. I believe that you will come away with some new and interesting ideas that when implemented will help your company be more competitive in the future. The vendors comprising DM Review's first annual Data Warehouse 100 were selected by you, our readers. In our most recent comprehensive readership study conducted by Market Perspectives, an independent research organization, you were asked to rate the vendors of data warehousing and business intelligence products used in your organizations. The survey was conducted over the Internet from April through July, 1998, and the top 100 vendors were chosen based on a two-stage weighting process that made calculated adjustments for the following factors: the rating scores for each product, the number of sites reporting use of the product, the number of products in a given product category, and the number of categories in which a vendor participated. The data warehousing/business intelligence market is still evolving, and new products are regularly introduced. Other companies and products may not yet have a sizable market presence, and products which are bundled with a total solution may not have widespread name recognition. Consequently, you may notice that some companies with effective data warehousing/business intelligence solutions do not appear in this year's Data Warehouse 100. Watch for these companies in the second annual Data Warehouse 100! Hitachi Data Systems—Number 42 >From Cliff Stratton, Executive Vice President Storage Line of Business. Hitachi Data Systems has built its multi-billion dollar business around enhancing our customers' chosen approaches to information technology. We are proud that many of the most significant users of technology in the world rely on our products, and we are dedicated to helping them get consistent and fast access to their information, as well as allowing them to access it on any computer, anywhere, any time. As a relatively new player in the rapidly growing data warehousing and business intelligence markets, we have been driven by our customers to help them implement systems and get answers to complex questions in real time—orders of magnitude faster than previous techniques and technology allowed. We've done this in the way we know best—by exercising our skill in spotting exciting new technology and providing tools and hardware that complement current architectures but allow startling results. Our storage solutions provide fail-proof environments for critical customer data at performance levels unsurpassed in the industry and with connectivity to mainframe, UNIX and NT systems. And our unique Nucleus Exploration Series products incorporate advanced technology to provide for warehouse prototyping, data exploration, transparent acceleration of queries in current warehouses and marts, and significant new capabilities for the emerging applications of on-line data publishing (OLDP), all scalable from the desktop to data marts and through to large central warehouses. As business operations evolve to accommodate new technologies such as e-commerce, so too must the data warehouse. Today data is generated so fast that much of it will never be read by the human eye. Artificial intelligence is in its infancy, but standards are emerging that will help to achieve future automatic data interpretation. Over the next two years, we expect to expand the range, scalability and connectivity of our warehouse and business intelligence solutions to always be one step ahead of critical customer requirements. Hitachi's technological depth and the "staying power" exhibited throughout its 88-year history ensure that we will always be there for our customers.
