I note your cynicism
Cynic? no I agree wholeheartedly with the village idea in raising children. I have many skills that I teach my children, but they are not me. There are things that they are interested in for which I am not a good teacher or role model. For example my son likes sports, baseball, soccer, and karate. I was the book reading, band playing type and generally only have a vague idea of the rules to these games. My son benefits from coaches and teachers and the many volunteers who organize the sporting events.

I just take issue with the comment from the post I quoted that this group dynamic cannot be sucessfull in a diverse community. The different parents and players on my son's soccer team only have to share an interest in the game and enough commitment to make the team viable. It is of little to no importance that there are members of different races, recent emigrants, or parents whom I don't socialize with outside the context of the sport.
