OT - Changing your e-mail address is getting easier. I'm switching
to ATHM as soon as I can (any day now...?) and am using a
"mail-forwarding" option available from lycos. to do that,
my e-mail address is now "...@lycosmail.com". That web site
FORWARDS my e-mail immediately to whatever 'real' e-mail
address I specify at their web site.

So, my friends/family, once switched to "...@lycosmail.com" need
never know that I switched to ATHM, I'll just update the e-mail
address at Lycos' web site when I change to ATHM. From then
on, all my e-mail will be forwarded to ATHM...

Of course, I'm relying on Lycos staying in business, etc, but
big deal, if anything happens I just blast a note to all my
address book telling them of my new address - what's the big deal?

Blazejay, re:<<...changing the email would be a colossal headache>>

It's only a matter of time before centralized and/or linked databases are widely available as a "change of address" portal. You pay a 1 time fee to register your old and new email, then people need to get trained to look up new email addresses (when they send one and it gets returned as undeliverable) at these sites. No muss, no fuss, no more AOL handcuffs.

It MUST be centralized or linked for it to work effectively. If you have to look at several such sites before you find someone's new address, it's value is much lower. I guess search robots could be used if there were several, but those can be blocked. Probably pretty likeky there will be several (at least initially). Not exactly high barriers to entry.

for example:
patent.womplex.ibm.com

patent.womplex.ibm.com
