Even if data is also stored along with the video segments, it will never be the type of data that has to be 100% accurate every single time - it will never be mission critical. That sort of data will be burned into the hardware. Look at it this way - if the program guide is wrong occasionally (but not TOO often), you're not going to cancel your service and toss the box. With a regular PC hard drive, if you lost data once a week, you'd trash the drive (and the company).
