OT port replicator
A port replicator just passes the signals from the back of the notebook to a convienient place to put a monitor, power plug, and keyboard/mouse. It is still the same as if those devices were connected to the back of the laptop.

A docking station has additional logic for pci cards which can be added in addition to what is onboard the notebook. They usually have network hookup and additional sound capabilities.

There is not currently a docking station for the inspiron 7000 although a port replicator is available.

Andrew: i have been told that one is better off with the Lattitude family of laptops of dell, because there is a docking station for that class. There is no docking station for the Inspiron "class" yet, and none in the near future. You might have to remind me in a couple of weeks, as it may take me that long to work on this, and at the same time, work on the new stock patterns, which may result, from the announcement today. later. (I'm sort of overloaded now. But I am very glad you are wanting a solution to the same thing I am---multiple monitors, from a laptop.)

Make sure you understand the difference between true 'multiple monitors'
and what you will have with your laptop. With WIN98, you can add a second
video card to a *desktop* machine and have your WIN desktop spread
*across* two monitors. This is *not* what you will get if you plug a second
monitor into your laptop, with or without the docking station. You will simply
get a second display that will duplicate what you see on your laptop LCD (if
your laptop supports simultaneous viewing). If not, you can either view data
on the laptop LCD or monitor, but not both at the same time...
