Jeff << Applied Materials to Bar Some Investors From Conference Call Applied Materials to Bar Some Investors From Conference Call Santa Clara, California, Feb. 16 (Bloomberg) -- Applied Materials Inc., the biggest maker of semiconductor equipment, plans to bar some investors from a conference call after reporting its fiscal first-quarter earnings this afternoon. Applied Materials will allow only select large investors and financial analysts to participate in the discussion of its results. The Santa Clara, California-based will report earnings shortly after the close of regular U.S. trading. The exclusion means smaller investors without access to Wall Street research won't be privy to comments from Applied Materials executives, which can result in significant moves in the price of the company's stock. A company spokesman said Applied Materials isn't letting all shareholders on the call because of the ''logistics'' of setting up the necessary phone lines. He said a recording of the call will be available later to anyone. Applied Materials is expected to earn 6 cents a share, based on the average estimate of analysts polled by First Call Corp. It earned 52 cents in the same quarter a year earlier. Its shares fell 1 to 65 7/8 in late trading. >>
