I agree with you that TV related disk drives won't make QNTM any significant money in the near term. However, I do think it is a great idea (I'm assuming it works as described, I haven't seen it). With the cable operators already knee deep in converting their networks to digital, laying fiber, providing high-speed internet and telephony services, it doesn't surprise me at all that they have too much on their plates to want to try this now.

If, however, Tivo or ReplayTV can show that the technology works well and consumers want it, they will line up to make deals, and quickly. Didn't you say that the settop box guys had already set aside space and had available power, etc.

You are clearly right that the cable companies are currently in the driver's seat when it comes to establishing product features and availability. However, it seems to me that cable companies would like to get out from under providing the cable modems and settop boxes. With standards, this can happen since all devices will work with everyone's system..This will leave it open for any settop box mfg. to take a flyer.
