Interesting post in nine thread of yahoo. While not actively involved in this business for the past 3 years, I've been paying close attention to segment developments. I was directly involved for a dozen years prior to 95. I believe this is an historical event for the industry...not just NINE. Pay attention! This new product combo redefines the segment. When a display board is matched to a custom display, unique properties result. HISTORY: This really hasn't happend for a long time. The first graphics card companies had to work directly with CRT mfgs to create a a new category of monitors in order to jump start a market in high resolution. Monitor technology hasn't changed much since the late 80s with variable scanning, self synching monitors. Sure, prices came down and popularized the high resolution movement to the point of commoditization. This Mitsubishi mfgdSGI display is next generation technology mated to NINE's first really low cost card for pros. MKT POSITION: NINE is only board mfg lined up with a flat panel device. No other mass market board mfg is mated to a specific display. Not ATI, Diamond, STB, Matrox...none. The market is wide open because SGI and NINE created the opportunity. This product will retail for $1600 in twelve months, which is the sweet spot for 19" displays. And what power user wouldn't want an SGI logo on their desktop? Look closely at how the ante has been up'ed: 0. All digital high resolution output is an industry first and offers a purified signal and unsurpassed image quality...no more analog!!! 1. Smallest dot pitch means greater dots per inch means finer resolution 2. Greater color spectrum and contrast than conventional CRTs 3. One third less $ than same size, resolution, color 4. NINE is EXCLUSIVE PC distribution source for retail and oem 5. Aligned with SGI ... undisputed leader in graphics universe 6. Real time motion decoding for fast movies for viewers or editors 7. NINE first to exploit new flat panel programmers device interface 8. OEMs are already jockeying for Spring 99 product differentiation and the 1600SW is all alone in a class by itself 9. The stock market as a whole is unstable and price drops will occur before the real meat of this new product line takes hold. BALLS. This is a high risk market segment. Short term stock appreciation requires luck. If you are unfamiliar with display technology, get out while you're whole. This is a pure play betting all the marbles. Take no prisoners!
